Turn and Return

How quickly the crowd turned
With palms lifted to glorify
To fists raised,
Shouting, "Crucify!"

Christ was, not only, their Teacher
But Healer and Lord;
They turned on Him, spurned Him,
His very existence opposed
They denied Him, betrayed Him
How quickly their hands,
Eyes, hearts and minds
Went from opened to closed

Like a flower that curls
Into itself in the night
They sanctioned His fate
Like a grave sealed tight
There was no turning back
They had turned their backs
On their Messiah, the Christ

And what did Jesus do?
He came to find them in their faithlessness
And called them to return
And by His mercy, be restored;
He illuminated scripture
And showed them how He suffered
So they could know the righteousness
And lovingkindness of the Lord

The tomb was opened;
The veil in the temple
Of tradition was torn;
Their eyes could see Christ,
Could see a new and living way
On that first Easter morn
